The Greenwood EAA Chapter 1023 has had to cancel its planned Young Eagles Flying day previously planned for June 14 at the Greenwood County Airport. Coordinators were unable to obtain an adequate number of volunteer pilots and airplanes to handle the usually well-attended event which is normally held every year on a Saturday during the Festival of Flowers. The chapter is hoping to organize a similar event in the fall.
- What is “Young Eagles”?
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. - What will I see on my Young Eagles flight?
We typically fly a “circular” route around the center of Greenwood, so you will see downtown. Following takeoff from GRD airport, we fly northeast to Lake Greenwood, southeast over a portion of the lake and the FUJI plant, down to just south of Self Regional Hospital, then west to Lowes / Wal-Mart area, northeast to over the high school then land back at the airport. The flight takes about 15-20 minutes. - How safe is flying?
Flying an airplane is safer than many other forms of recreation. Each Young Eagle flight takes place in a FAA registered airplane flown by a licensed pilot. The flight is conducted according to federal regulations. No aerobatic or non-standard maneuvers will be performed. - Can my parent or guardian fly with me?
No. The flights are limited to children between the ages of 8 - 17. - Are there any sign-up forms?
Yes, there is one short registration form which includes “Young Eagle” name, address, date-of-birth and telephone information, along with a signature line to indicate Parent/Guardian permission. The forms will be available at Greenwood County airport on the day of the Young Eagles flights - June 14, 2008
