The SC Festival of Flowers Wachovia Triathlon kicks off one of the nation’s most popular festivals in Greenwood, SC. As the second international distance event in the SCTS, this event is becoming very competitive and is one not to miss. This is also a great chance to preview the SC Half Ironman course that is held at the same venue in late September. The 2008 edition of this event will serve as the USA Triathlon Southeast Regional Championship qualifying the top 33% of each age group for the 2008 USAT Age Group National Championship. The swim begins in the water that is normally on the border-line between wetsuit legal and not. The course is a counter clockwise rectangular loop beginning at the run finish location and ending a few hundred yards away at the transition area. The bike course changed in 2006 to eliminate two out and back sections. Now athletes will travel the one loop 24 mile course without any out and back stretches. This change makes for a safer and faster course. Road surfaces are good to excellent. Turns are marked with pavement markings and directional arrows with police and volunteers at all intersections. A water bottle handoff is found at mile 13.The run is an out and back 10k affair. 90% of the run is closed to traffic. Aid stations are placed every mile and approximately 40% of the course is shaded. The entire run is on pavement and athletes finish with a very short but steep hill up to the John Drummond Center.

The SC Festival’s Triathlon has been selected as a 2008 USA Triathlon Regional Championship!
USAT carefully selects 10 Regional Championship races (one in each region) who have met specific USAT guidelines ranging from sanctioning, safety and quality of the event to promotion, community and athlete support of the event. The purpose of the Regional Championship events is to showcase a selection of the best USAT Sanctioned events and to give each race the opportunity to exhibit its individual characteristics on a National stage. The 2008 Regional Championship races will qualify the top 33 percent or top five finishers (whichever is greater) in each age group for the 2008 Age Group National Championship.
