2010 Garden Tours:
The South Carolina Festival of Flowers and Greenwood Council of Garden Clubs are proud to present five beautiful garden tours this year. Come spend the day strolling through private home gardens.
Dr. Daniel and Marjorie Ball, 304 West Durst Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649
Under the shade of lofty trees, curving borders of blue hydrangea create a spectacular summer display in this mature garden which seems made for strolling. Five varieties of Japanese maples along with a year-round display of perennials create vivid vistas of color. A Greenwood landmark, the garden has served as a gathering place for the Lander and Greenwood communities since the President’s Home was built in 1943. Festival visitors are invited to continue their Lander garden tour with a walk past the amphitheatre and a view of the historic Memorial Walk and the Lander University Arboretum.
Don and Cleo Farmer, 218 Woodlawn Street, Greenwood, SC 29649The sunny borders are filled with 800+ daylily varieties, all labeled, as well as other perennials. Named hosta varieties thrive in the shade of dogwoods and ornamental apple trees. Of special interest is a New Zealand Maple Tree which came to this garden directly from New Zealand. A rose arbor, small pond and statuary are points of interest in the landscape. Many daylily and hosta varieties are offered for sale.
William and Catherine Gaither, 128 Tall Pines Trail, Greenwood, SC 29646Escape to this woodland paradise in the middle of the Gatewood Community. Meander through woodland trails and discover whimsical surprises and garden treasures around every nook. You will be amazed in how five years the Gaithers have taken an overgrown lot and transformed it into a gardener’s woodland playground. With its steep slope, magnificent view of the Gatewood Lakes and numerous hydrangeas, ferns and other shade garden favorites you will think you have been transported to a lake side cabin in the mountains.
Jack and Diane Lenning, 405 Orchard Drive, Greenwood, SC 29649This small garden is packed full of interest! An impressive fresh-water pond is the focal point of the front of the house, with two small waterfalls and a fountain cascading from a Classical-style statue. The pool is nestled in a variety of grasses and flowering plants which provide a transition to the beds of perennials that include sun loving Purple Coneflowers, Rudbeckia and Daylilies, as well as an interesting selection of shade lovers in appropriate spots. The lower level is highlighted by a collection of container plantings accented by multi-colored river rock and richly hued and imaginative pots. And keep your eye out for a surprise here and there in the compact but interesting garden!
South Main Baptist Church Meditation Garden, 1000 South Main Street, Greenwood, SC 29646What started in a corner of an unkempt backyard that became the property of South Main Street Baptist Church, has, in three years, become a refuge and a place of prayer for those who have dug in its soil and planted in its beds or just come to rest in its place of quiet and peacefulness just one-half block from South Main Street. This is a “Bible Garden“, with areas designated as Mary’s garden, Jesus’ garden, the garden of Jesus and the children, the Bible herb garden, and others. The plants and shrubs are marked and identified where they are mentioned in the Bible. We invite you to spend some part of your busy day here, relaxing, resting, reading about each shrub or plant, or just ‘walking a while with Him’
