Sustainable Living

This year the South Carolina Festival of Flowers is adding a new dimension that is sure to be of interest not only to gardeners but to everyone who is developing an interest in the new “greener” way of living. New activities are being planned that will provide opportunities for participants to learn about sustainable and simpler lifestyles, including green building practices, energy and water conservation programs, recycling, environmentally responsible landscaping, green purchasing policies, renewable energies, alternative fuels and more.

The “green” life also includes a way of eating by linking the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. This year the Festival will support local growers and farmers who will be selling organic produce, dairy products and more. Local restaurants will participate by featuring foods historically linked to South Carolina that are endangered such as Carolina Gold Rice and Sea Island Red Peas.
